CARBON: building permit signed for future gigafactory

02 April 2025

On Tuesday, 1 April, the building permit for Europe's largest photovoltaic panel factory was officially signed at the Istres sub-prefecture. This momentous occasion took place in the presence of Pierre-Emmanuel MARTIN (co-founder and president of CARBON), Christophe BORGUS (sub prefect), Isabelle CAMPAGNOLA SAVON (regional councillor representing Renaud MUSELIER, President of the Sud Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region, François BERNARDINI (the mayor of Istres and vice-president of the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis), René RAIMONDI (mayor of Fos-sur-Mer), and Rémi COSTANTINO (deputy managing director in charge of major projects for the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille).

Thanks to an investment of €1.5 billion and the support of the Sud Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region, CARBON create more than 3000 direct jobs. Starting in 2026, the company will cover all stages of the process from the design to the production of photovoltaic panels.

As the public debate on the reindustrialisation and decarbonisation of the Fos-Étang de Berre area began on Wednesday, April 2, this significant step forward reflects the regional policy's commitment to sustainable reindustrialisation.

In addition, the industrial company has announced the launch of a fundraising campaign, opening up its capital to the general public with the aim of raising €1 million.

Supported by risingSUD since the start of the project, CARBON is contributing to the international appeal and industrial sovereignty of the South of France.
