How does the region deliver digital connectivity and expertise?

The Région Sud's digital connectivity and transport infrastructure are key structural assets for the technology ecosystem.

A leading digital and data hub

Marseille is the world's 6th largest Internet interconnection hub and hosts 17 submarine cables linking Europe to Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Twelve data centres are operational in the metropolitan area, with three more under construction, for a combined capacity exceeding 300 MW. Marseille-Provence Airport serves 128 destinations, facilitating mobility for international talent and decision-makers.

Innovation at the heart of the AKTANTIS cluster

The AKTANTIS competitiveness cluster, formed from the SCS-Optitec merger, covers five technology areas: microelectronics, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, Internet of Things and photonics/imaging. Its 320 members (industrial groups, SMEs, laboratories and universities) have contributed to over €1Bn in cumulative R&D investment. The cluster aims to reach 400 members by the end of 2026.

The Smart Region's pillars of excellence

The regional strategy structures the digital ecosystem around four main areas:

Microelectronics and semiconductors

The Région Sud is France's 2nd largest semiconductor production centre. STMicroelectronics operates a manufacturing and R&D site in Rousset with around 3,500 employees, covering the design, fabrication and testing of components for the automotive and industrial sectors.

Artificial intelligence and data science

The 3IA Côte d'Azur institute (one of France's four national AI institutes) is affiliated with Université Côte d'Azur, CNRS and Inria. In 2025, the "3IA Côte d'Azur 2030" programme, with €20M over five years, was launched to strengthen research in AI applied to health and smart territories.

Cybersecurity and secure communications

Regional cybersecurity expertise is structured by the AKTANTIS cluster and the Campus Cyber RégionSud, launched in 2024 with four territorial hubs (Marseille, Sophia Antipolis, Salon-de-Provence, Toulon). The region concentrates data protection and critical systems players serving digital sovereignty.

IoT and edge computing

The deployment of smart sensors and edge data processing solutions leverages the regional industrial fabric (AKTANTIS, Sophia Antipolis, Technopôle de la Mer). Applications span energy efficiency, predictive maintenance and intelligent urban infrastructure management.

3 questions to our Smart Tech sector expert

Which smart tech segments are hiring the most in the South of France?

Cybersecurity, with the rollout of the Campus Cyber RégionSud across 4 hubs. Artificial intelligence, driven by 3IA Côte d'Azur and PEPR investments. And microelectronics, where the European Chips Act is driving growing needs around STMicroelectronics in Rousset and AKTANTIS cluster companies. The skills shortage is significant, which also explains the arrival of new schools and training programmes in the region.

Does a tech start-up necessarily have to set up in Sophia Antipolis?

Sophia remains the reference for AI R&D, connectivity and access to an international talent pool. But Marseille is growing in data centres, cybersecurity and trusted digital. Toulon specialises in connected naval and underwater technologies. The choice depends on the target market and the type of clients you are looking for. We support companies in this process to find the most suitable geographical position.

What sets the South of France's tech ecosystem apart from other French hubs?

The concentration of players within a compact geographical area. Sophia Antipolis brings together 2,650 companies and 44,500 jobs across 2,400 hectares – a unique case in France. Add to this the exceptional connectivity of Marseille (17 submarine cables, European data hub), and the presence of major corporations (Thales, Amadeus, STMicro) that generate an ecosystem of subcontractors and start-ups. The quality of life also remains a tangible argument for attracting international talent.

Leading companies:

AMADEUS, ARM, CMA CGM, DOCAPOSTE, HP ENTERPRISE, IBM, INTERXION, JAGUAR NETWORK, KONTRON, NXP, QUALCOMM, RENAULT SOFTWARE LABS, SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC, STMICROELECTRONICS, THALES
